Why Screening Matters

Screening tests are designed to look for cancer or precancerous changes before symptoms appear.

Early detection may:

  • Identify cancer at an earlier stage
  • Provide more treatment options
  • Support better long-term outcomes
  • Help guide appropriate follow-up care

Screening recommendations vary based on age, medical history, and individual risk factors.

Common Cancer Screening Tests

Depending on personal risk factors and guidelines, screening may include:

  • Mammography
  • Additional imaging when recommended
  • Low-dose CT scans for individuals who meet screening criteria
  • PSA blood tests
  • Discussion of risks and benefits with a healthcare provider
  • Colonoscopy
  • Other screening tests as recommended
  • Pap tests
  • HPV testing

Not every screening test is appropriate for every individual. Decisions are best made in partnership with a healthcare provider.

Personalized Screening Decisions

Screening recommendations are influenced by:

  • Age
  • Family history
  • Personal medical history
  • Genetic risk factors
  • Prior test results

Our team encourages patients to discuss screening questions with their primary care provider or specialist to determine what is appropriate for their individual situation.

When Additional Evaluation Is Needed

If a screening test identifies an abnormal result, further evaluation may be recommended. At Brazos Valley Cancer Center, our physicians:

  • Review screening results carefully
  • Help explain findings and next steps
  • Coordinate diagnostic testing or specialty referrals when needed
  • Provide guidance and support throughout the process
